Upholstery technology

How do I recognize a good sofa when I see one? At first glance, that's just about impossible since: every piece of upholstered furniture is just full of little secrets. And only those who know all about these mysteries will be able to recognize the right sofa and purchase it. In addition to the aesthetic aspects and the workmanship, naturally the question of "inner values" also arises. Test the firmness of the upholstery and make sure that the individual seating proportions are right for you. In short: Quality has to be discovered by "sitting."

Upholstery
Sitting comfort is mainly determined by the upholstery. And upholstery can vary quite a bit. Upholstery is either soft or firm, depending on the character of the particular piece of furniture. In principle, the following rule holds true: The softer the upholstery, the more you are going to sink into the sofa. On the other hand, a firm upholstery makes it easier to stand up and sit down. Sinking in is less pronounced and the sofa's appearance is more defined. The covering material also wrinkles differently. Soft upholstery wrinkles naturally on the seats, backs and armrests. The soft character emphasizes a homey, comfortable look. It is not unusual to use different seat firmnesses within a large upholstered group.

Try out
Always be sure to take your time when you "test sit" and ask the specialized personnel about their opinions, too. That's the only way to find out just how comfortable and homey a sofa really is. And bring along a lot of time to try out every conceivable sitting and reclining position on the piece of furniture of your choice.

After a while
Just as all automobiles have to be broken in, sofas have to be "sat in." This changes seating firmness. The seating becomes softer depending on the type and duration of use. This is a normal process that all upholstery has to go through. Although it's easy to become fond of a favorite seat, we recommend using all seating elements equally or moving the loose cushions around. One-sided use often causes different form depressions.
