Climate Pact for the Furniture Industry

The "Climate Pact for the Furniture Industry" continues to grow: the upholstered furniture manufacturer KOINOR fromMichelau has now joined. The company is committed to climate protection and, together with a professional climate consultancy, has calculated its carbon footprint for the reporting year 2021 and identified CO₂ savings potential.

Sustainability has been a lived value at KOINOR for decades, demonstrated through support for numerous social, cultural, and environmental projects. The company shows its sense of responsibility through the foundation established by company founder Horst Müller, which has donated around two million euros in recent years. This commitment is also reflected in the company’s strong allegiance to its location. In 2020, KOINOR received the “Furniture Made  in Germany” label, awarded by the DGM, for its entire collection of dining and upholstered furniture.

The company from Upper Franconia now plans to reduce its CO₂ emissions by 40 percent over the next three years. Remaining emissions will be offset by investments in certified climate protection projects, aiming for full climate neutrality from 2023 onwards. KOINOR is already taking action to achieve these goals: converting to LED lighting, using CO₂-neutral heating systems, switching to 100 percent green electricity, transitioning its truck and car fleet, renovating all buildings for energy efficiency, installing photovoltaic systems for in-house power generation, and more.

An increasing number of furniture manufacturers—most of them members of the DGM—are joining the climate initiative of the furniture industry to demonstrate their sense of responsibility for the climate and future generations, just as KOINOR has now done.

“We are very pleased that the renowned upholstered furniture manufacturer KOINOR is reinforcing its high standards of quality and sustainability by joining the Climate Pact. Since 1998, the company has held the ‘Golden M’ and now we can additionally certify KOINOR’s commitment with our climate label,” said Jochen Winning, Managing Director of the DGM. He added: “Furniture manufacturing can’t be completely CO₂-free, but it is a very important and right step when companies like KOINOR raise their climate awareness and reduce their emissions as much as possible.”

The “Climate Pact for the Furniture Industry” was launched in 2016 by the German Furniture Quality Association (DGM), which has been promoting tested furniture quality since 1963 and, supported by independent testing institutes, awards the RAL quality label “Golden M.”

“The ‘Golden M’ stands for safety, durability, flawless functionality, as well as health and environmental compatibility of furniture. With the Climate Pact, we wanted to take it a step further. The furniture industry is taking on a pioneering role within the German economy. We hope that many more companies and industries will follow,” concluded DGM Managing Director Jochen Winning.
